Click to view map Coordinates: | Reid Square, a charming, oak-shaded 'outspan' adjoining the DR Church, probably dates from the time of the building of the first church in 1802. The land on its north side, adjoining the 'Cottage', formed part of the grant to Falck. He sold it off in 1836, and in 1845 it became the property of Joseph Barry who in 1860 built a two-storeyed, slate-roofed building on it containing three small one-room over one-room apartments or tuishuisies for the use of congregation members visiting Swellendam at nagmaal and other occasions. These have been well restored. The adjoining four-unit building is similar, but built in 1876, with a flat roof, by John Joseph Barry, who bought the remaining land in 1867. The restoration of these is less successful. [Oberholster p122.] Books that reference Townhouses (Tuishuisies) - Second
