JOHANNESBURG ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY
ENDSTEAD
This beautifully scaled home was designed by Ernest
Wilmott Sloper in 1903 for himself when he joined Herbert
Baker as a partner. They shared the Arts and Crafts
philosophy and all the projects in the burgeoning practice,
but Baker credited Sloper with the patience to teach stone-
masons. The first to lecture in architecture in
Johannesburg, Sloper imbued his students with his
philosophy and restraint.
