Named after the Randlords and diamond magnates Sir Julius Wernher (1850 – 1912) and Sir Alfred Beit (1853 – 1906). Both were major philanthropists in the UK and Southern Africa, including in the fields of science and education.

The building was restored after a fire in 1936.
