In the 1850s, Green Point Common was a wide open space which was used for horse-racing. In 1906, after racing had ceased, the Metropolitan Golf Club leased the old race stand and converted it into a clubhouse. It was used as such until a new clubhouse was built in 1959. Since then the old building, much altered and extended, has housed an art school and a restaurant, and is currently occupied by a fast-food chain [MacDonalds].
