The cornerstone was unveiled by Dr Andrew Murray on 8 April 1905. The building cost £19600. The organ imported from London, the pews imported from Egypt, the pulpit and the lighting cost an additional £4570. The overpowering feature of the interior of the church is the wooden bows symbolising Christ’s crown of thorns. The church together with its burial vaults was declared a National Monument in 1982 and is now a Provincial Heritage Site. The building was designed by E Sherwood and H D Pitts of the Cape Town firm of architects Sherwood, Pitts & Wood. The building contractor was the firm de Villiers, Larsson & Co. of Paarl. The organ was constructed by Norman & Beard of London & Norwich, and was rebuilt in 1942. The church can seat about 2000 persons. The height of the tower is 57 metres.
