(BC 206.54) Built for De Beer’s Cold Storage Syndicate, owned by CJ Rhodes. The building was later occupied by Standard Bank, until 1974. Transcription of Blue Plaque Simon's Town Historical Society DE BEER'S BUILDING Probably one of the smallest architectural commissions ever undertaken by Sir Herbert Baker, better known for the Union Buildings in Pretoria and Groote Schuur. Originally designed in 1901 as a cold storage depot for Imperial Cold Storage who supplied the Royal Navy with meat (a Company belonging to Cecil Rhodes). In 1921 it was purchased by the Standard Bank and converted into bank premises and used as such for some 40 years. It was later used for various commercial enterprises and declared a National Monument in 1981.
