House H Tevis - Monterey
Wynberg, Western Cape

Brian George Lewis MANSERGH: Architect
Date:1932
Type:Homestead
Status:Adaptive re-use

(SAB Oct 1932:93)

Hugh Tevis (1902-c71) bought a large piece of land on Wynberg Hill in 1928, and in 1932 he commissioned Brian Mansergh "to design a neo-Tudor mansion which was the last word in extravagance - for example, the oak panelling was brought out and installed by Liberty's of London" (Hart 1999 : 42). Mrs Tevis "was a keen gardener, and created a showpiece in the grounds which were sometimes opened for charity" (Hart)

Tevis named the house 'Monterey'. He sold the house in the early 1950s, and it was the home of Monterey Preparatory School from 1953 to 1976. The building was later used as the head office of a large corporation.

The building was gazetted as a national monument in 1985.
