The building was built in two stages, the first portion at the south western corner was built in 1929 (Pryce-Lewis list 15 305; plan deviations 15 405), the centre and remaining portion were completed in 1941.

It was used by the Shell Oil Company as their Head Office in Cape Town until 1979 and was then converted to a 170-room hotel for the Holiday Inn Hotels group, called The Inn on the Square. (Turtle SA)

Became a Park Inn, date not available. Proclaimed a National Monument in 1961.

Currently [2018] ONOMO Hotel Cape Town - Inn on the Square (ONOMO).
