The grand 1897 stone mansion, built for Randlord Barney Barnato in Berea, Johannesburg, was never occupied by him due to his death before its completion. Supervised by Barnato’s nephew, Solly Joel, and known as the Joel House, it served as a convalescent home for British officers during the Second Boer War (1899–1902) and later as temporary quarters for King Edward VII High School for Boys while its Houghton campus was constructed. Eventually, the property was donated to the Transvaal Department of Education and demolished to make way for Barnato Park High School, originally a girls’ school (Johannesburg High School for Girls). Only the entrance gates (made by Gardiner Sons & Co.Ltd. in Bristol, England) remain. (Source: Wikipedia)
