[verification needed] Name is said to be the corruption of a Sotho word meaning 'the place where nothing grows'. Cedara College of Agriculture is an agricultural college and research station near Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, founded partly by Thomas Robertson Sim. The foundation stone of the "School of Agriculture and Forestry" was laid on 28 April 1905. See Wikipedia and KZN Agriculture. The Old Hostel Building was declared a National Monument in March 1989 and is now a Provincial Heritage Site. (FRIBA nom papers 1925; SAMBF Jnl Jun 1905:29-30; NWW 1906) -------------------- The first buildings to be erected, in order, were the houses of the Farm Manager, the chemist and the experimentalist, and the cow-byre. The foundation stone of the hostel was laid in 1905 - this building housed both residentail accommodation and lecture rooms. The educational block was completed in 1915.
