Brickfield Road (Manning Place) Temple
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

Suberayaloo Palani CHETTY: Architect
Date:1938
Type:Hindu Temple
Status:Extant
Street:Brickfield Rd

The Manning Place temple Shri Nivasha Perumal Kouvil is one of the foremost examples of a community temple of this kind. It started as a private wood-and-iron shrine in someone's garden across the road. With the establishment of a strong neighbourhood spirit, this was converted into a more substantial building on another piece of ground a little further along. After municipal expropriation in 1934, the proceeds were used to build a public temple on ground donated by Appelsamy Naidoo on the opposite side of Brickfield Road.
