Kearney (1973:35) describes the Ebenezer Chapel in Pietermaritzburg as 'One of the most unusual chapels built in Natal. Although built in 1865 it still showed the strong influence of Cape architecture in Natal. This is one of the many churches in South Africa designed and built by the Rev J Archbell.'

The Ebenezer Chapel building is also ascribed to James ALLISON.

It has since been altered for architects' offices.
