Herschel Girls School Claremont, Cape Town, Western Cape WALGATE and ELSWORTH: Architect

(SAB Jan 1934:41; Pryce-Lewis list 15 533; 15 946; 16 506). The school was opened in 1922, in a house named 'Herschel', which was built circa 1840. School buildings were constructed around the old house and in its grounds from time to time, including : a school hall, classrooms and science laboratory in 1936 a library in 1940 (converted into a chapel in 1994) an arts block in 1977 a principal's residence in 1986 a 299-seat theatre in 1988 a new science block in 1995 a sports centre in 1997 Source: Herschel Heritage.
