LOWER HOUGHTON HERITAGE AREA
MOURGANA
73 Houghton Drive, a beautifully-proportioned
example of Edwardian Arts and Crafts style, was
designed in 1927 for James and Ethel Gray by Walter
and Cyril Reid. James Gray played an important role in
the advancement of science in South Africa and was
also active in municipal and political affairs, serving as
Johannesburg’s mayor in 1947, the year of the British
Royal Family visit. Ethel was a meticulous
researcher, and partnered with James in writing
two important books on the discovery of
the Witwatersrand gold fields.
