The house was built by Sir Frank Reynolds, a sugar magnate, on a headland above Umdoni Point, as a seaside retreat for Prime Minister General Louis Botha and other South African Prime Ministers. Reynolds arranged with the South African Railways to construct a railway halt at Umdoni Point to facilitate the delivery of building materials. Botha passed away in 1919, before the house was completed.
