Gus Monzal, an Italian Bridge builder was the designer and contracted to build the Athlone Bridge (Dave Muller on FB). This bridge was funded by Durban North Estates Ltd. It opened up Durban North as a desirable residential area. Shareholders did very well out of their investment (Brian Hills on FB). It was demolished in the 1970s to make way for the existing one.
