The pioneer cottage in Silverton was built by David Adolf Machiel Botha, the fifth son of Johannes Petrus Botha, a citizen of Swellendam. David Botha and his family, like many other Voortrekkers, were driven from Ohrigstad by malaria. In the vicinity of the Magaliesberg, he settled on the farm Hartebeestpoort, now Silverton, and built the cottage. In 1874, the farm was sold to a German, Hans Heinrich Mund (1832–1900). Shortly after Hans Mund’s death in 1900, his son built a modern Victorian house next to the thatched cottage, where he and his family lived. Meanwhile, the old thatched cottage was preserved and primarily used as a storage room. In 1961, the Silverton Town Council received this part of Hartebeestpoort as a gift from Mrs. JL Mund, Hans Mund’s daughter-in-law. At the invitation of the Silverton Town Council, the cottage was restored by Mrs. K Roodt-Coetzee and architect Albrecht Holm. It is said to be the oldest building in Pretoria.
