Originally built in 1859, it housed British convicts working on the breakwater. The design was based on the Millbank and Pentonville prisons in England. Twenty new cells were added in 1889. The Industrial Breakwater Prison (current building), completed in 1901, was a prison for 10 years. It then became a juvenile offenders institution and from 1926 until 1989 a hostel for black dock workers. Now UCT Graduate School of Business.
