Initially, trains ran nonstop from Wynberg to Muizenberg, earning the nickname "Muizenberg Flyers" for their swift trips. Wealth from the Kimberly Diamond Fields transformed Muizenberg and Kalk Bay into trendy retreats for tycoons and businessmen, who constructed lavish homes there. In 1883, the railway extended to Kalk Bay, boosting its appeal as a day-trip destination.

In 1883, Cape Government Railways acquired Thomas Cutting’s home, converting it into a railway station, which opened the day the railway reached Kalk Bay.

When the line reached Kalk Bay in 1883, a platform was built near St James Church (built in 1858). As the area’s popularity grew, a proper station was constructed in 1900, replacing the church, which was rebuilt across the road. At the suggestion of parish priest Father Duignam, the station retained the name St James.
