Click to view large map Coordinates: | The history of Studland reflects a balance between accommodating sailors' needs ashore and maintaining order in a port town. Following the 1795 occupation, Admiral Elphinstone identified a strategically located wine house at the end of the landing jetty, where many sailors lingered, disrupting discipline. The owner was compelled to shut it down and relocate to a new site away from the public wharf. In 1797, Johannes Paulus Eksteen received a land grant to establish a "Wijn Huys" under specific conditions, including positioning the entrance away from the main road to the military hospital, as agreed with Major Grimston. A brewery, built before 1830 behind Yarra Yarra, complemented the wine house, with the brewer residing in Studland. Designated a National Monument in 1965, Studland has since been reclassified as a Provincial Monument and recently repurposed into private residential units.
