| Built by the "Lion of Beaufort", Sir John Charles Molteno, the first governor of the Cape Province. The building which stands on Erf 89629 was transferred from Alexander Maderose to Sir John on 5 April 1876 for £415. He subsequently named the premises "Beaufort Cottage" and on his death his son-in-law T. J. Anderson (he married Sir John’s 3rd daughter Maria Molteno) bought "Beaufort Cottage" on 30 May 1890. Thereafter he sold it to Dr Charles Frederick Murray on 21 February 1893. It appears from the early deed records that a building existed for many years on this property prior to Sir John’s purchase, and in the mid-1840s application was made for a liquor licence on these premises. It was shown that Arthur Bisset, attorney, lived here in 1927 and 1940. Source: Kalk Bay Historical Association, Bulletin 6, 2002, p202. |
