The building once housed the Empire cinema and apartments with spectacular views across False Bay. There was a time towards the end of the twentieth century that Muizenberg became pretty derelict. By the 1990s the beautiful art Deco Empire Cinema was a burnt-out shell, frequented by vagrants. Drug dealers had taken over houses in the village which was becoming a no-go area. Hotels were turned into Old Age Homes, and/or flats. (Sources: JewishGen).
