Central Cape Town, Western Cape

John PARKER: Architect
AB REID and CO: Contractor

Date:c1896
Type:Offices
Status:Demolished
Street:3 (later 33) St George's Street

According to The Cape Town Guide (1897), this "handsome suite of offices" was built on the site of the building which the company had rented for the past fourteen years. "The building is constructed of stone and brick; the front is ornamented with stucco work after the style of the French Renaissance, some of the front windows being of lead came work glazed with cathedral glass. It has a frontage of about 25 feet by a depth of 70 feet, and is three stories in height."

On the ground floor were a "handsomely tiled vestibule and hall", a large and lofty room for the manager, a clerks' office, and the public office. The upper floors were let to tenants, each floor having a suite of three "large, well-lighted and lofty" offices with "complete lavatory arrangements".

"The whole design has been carried out in a most efficient manner by Messrs A.B. Reid & Co, from plans prepared by Mr John Parker, architect, and the building is lighted by electricity installed by Mr Z.W. Morton, electrical engineer to Messrs Bull and Sinclair."

The site is now incorporated into the Woolworths site.
