House on a Hill
Northcliff, Johannesburg, Gauteng

Date:c1970
Type:Homestead
Status:Unknown

This house is at Northcliff, some six miles [9.6 km] north of the city in the attractively varied topography of the rugged hills that are to be found in this area. It is a half acre [2023 m sq] in extent and enjoys an almost rural setting. Situated on the spur of a hill with the ground falling away on two sides, it overlooks the Northern suburbs and the Magaliesberg mountains in the distance beyond.

The plan is designed to provide an effective but informal home of maximum economy for an architect, his wife and three daughters, coupled with the desire to take full advantage of the generous views and the opportunities of informal living which the climate permits.

This house has been created free of all tradition and preconceived ideas. It is a house in which to live and entertain in every sense of the word, with all living rooms north-facing and complete freedom of movement. Construction and finishes were both naturally affected by the budget limit. The roof covering consists of waterproofing on vermiculite screed laid to falls on Q.F. 3 Deck on mild steel beams, columns and fascias.

The remainder is either a large expanse of glass Or random rubble walling coupled with fairfaced stocks p.v.a. painted. Ceilings are either painted Q.F. 3 Deck or a dropped Oregon Pine tongued and grooved boarding. Floors generally are quarry tiles with carpets in all the bedrooms.
