Construction of the building began in November 1884 and was completed in July 1885. It was built by Church, Cheetham, and Layard from Kimberley. It was built of red bricks, and has wooden floors, and a zinc roof. In 1887 the Volksraad built a fort / prison behind the Council Chamber. This was constructed from ironstone (ysterklip) and has a zinc roof. The building served as magistrate's office, deeds office, post office, and state offices. It was declared a National Monument in 1936 and has served as the Nieuwe Republiek Museum since 1939. It was restored by the municipality in 1984 during the town’s centenary celebrations.
