Founded by Rev Horace Coles of the Anglican Church for boys in need after the 1918 flu pandemic. It also served as a training centre for adult leaders of the Scout Movement from 1922 onwards. The neighbouring Cape Dutch homestead Bellevue housed the hostel's principal. The hostel with its extensive grounds were sold in 1991 for redevelopment as an exclusive security housing estate, called St John's Estate. Several townhouses and freestanding houses were built, and the hostel was turned into luxury apartments. The estate's main entrance is no longer in Upper Kloof St, but off Higgo Crescent. |
