JOHANNESBURG ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY
TAYNUILT
12 MURRAY STREET
Plans for this Herbert Baker and Francis Masey
designed home were approved in 1903, two months
after the proclamation of the suburb of Waverley. Built for
W Percy Thomson, solicitor for the Central South
African Railways, the home's north facade features pairs
of gables, columns, and imposing chimney stacks.
Called the "Waverley Estate" bordered by Murray, Argyle
and Campbell Streets, the home was later named Taynuilt
after the Caledonian birthplace of the then owner,
linking it to the suburb's Scottish street names. The
original structure was carefully preserved during
extensions added by architects Dott (1943)
and Watermeyer (1986).
Have assigned this building to EH WATERMEYER but it could just as well be TP WATERMEYER or FS WATERMEYER. | |
