The massacre on 1837 02 17 of Voortrekker parties by Dingaan's impis following the Battle of Ncome/Blood River led to the death of 375 members of their laagers. In 1895, at the initiative of General PJ Joubert, on the Day of the Vow (16 December) the remains were collected and re-interred in a common grave. A memorial was erected on the spot in 1897. In 1937 it was declared a National Monument (now Provincial Heritage Resource) (SESA 2 1970:382b).
