Aliwal North - Barkly East branch rail line - Tunnel
Lady Grey, Eastern Cape

Date:1915
Client:SAR
Type:Tunnel
Status:Defunct

This tunnel was meant for the proposed trajectory of the branch rail line where, it would be aligned on the high plateau of the Witberge. The boat from England carrying the components of the bridge destined to cross the gorge was torpedoed in WW!. With this loss the trajectory was abandoned, making the tunnel defunct, a 'ghost tunne'. The alternative was to construct a series of swithback or 'reverses', for instance those at Tierkrans Switchback Railway.
