Also called Le Rivage.

Also called St James Retirement Hotel

St James Hotel was originally built in 1897 as a private home, known as Le Rivage. It became a hotel in 1903, managed and later owned by the Stansfield family who also owned the Bay View Hotel in Muizenberg.

Additions and alterations by Herbert JONES in 1910 for Mary Ann Chapman. The hotel then consisted of 8 bedrooms. In 1913 he also designed additions for Spencer Stansfield (new frontage and extensions to north and south with 41 new rooms, dining room, serving rooms and kitchen). In 1918 he designed a main balcony and balconies for rooms.

In 1920 John PERRY designed a large extension to the northern side along Sandhurst Road, and in 1923 designed four new bedrooms with balconies, and a fifth bedroom over the existing garages at Main Road level on the south side, at right angles to the main building.

Captain Gentry took ownership in 1925 and employed PERRY to design a large double-storey bedroom wing on the south side along the Star of the Sea Convent School.

In 1927 architect Hugh McQUEEN added garages, a double-storey bedroom wing, and a passage way to the southern end of the building for Captain Gentry.

It later belonged to the Protea Hotels Group. In 1990 it was converted into a retirement residence, the St James Retirement Hotel.
