Click to view large map Coordinates: | An unusual example of an underslung lattice girder type bridge, usually adopted for economic reasons. The girder trusses could be placed directly under the rails, reducing or removing the need for transverse beams between the trusses to support the track. This was relevant in the local context as the South African rail gauge of 1,065m (3'6") meant that the trusses were very close together. By comparison the international gauge is 1,435m. Information provided by Brian Lewis (ex SAR) via FB, edited and adapted by William MARTINSON, June 2023) This was replaced by the second bridge. |
