Built as a terminal station by the Cape Town Railway and Dock Company, incorporated in London, for a rail connection between Cape Town and Wellington, the first in the Cape. The first train arrived at Wellington Station in 1863, welcomed at an opening ceremony by the Governor Sir Philip Wodehouse and a military band. The station initially covered a single line. When the company was purchased by the CAPE GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS and the line extended beyond Wellington, the station was enlarged to the design of the in-house architect, AW ACKERMANN in the offices of the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of the CAPE COLONY.
