Westonaria House
Westonaria, Gauteng

Pieter BG KRUGER: Architect

Date:1960s
Type:Homestead
Status:Unknown

The site is a rather small suburban one in Westonaria, Transvaal [Gauteng], facing south to the road, in a built-up neighbourhood with no view of any consequence.

Whilst the character of surrounding buildings is unsympathetic, it was decided to work in the contemporary idiom and to face the house north across the garden.

The house has been planned in two parallel wings linked by a dining room/kitchen combination and bathroom.

The front or bedroom wing comprises the three bedrooms and dressing room plus a small internal patio which serves as an effective buffer between the main bedroom and servant's room within this unit.

On the south side, the living room is a private and secluded area, opening on to a well-planted patio. Adjoining it is a very small entrance off the double carport.

Finishes generally have been kept simple and straightforward, yet the most attentive care has been paid to internal finishes, where materials, textures and colours all combine to give a strong character, and pleasant visual effects have been achieved.
