| This hotel was built by James Orchard in 1836/37 and was one of the earliest commercial buildings in the then-new village of Claremont. Originally called 'Orchard's Hotel'. In 1900 TULLY and WATERS added rooms (Pryce-Lewis list 329) to the then renamed 'Crown Hotel', and it traded as such until the 1960s. It was demolished to make way for the Claremont Medical Centre (now 'Claremont Medical Suites'). (Arthur Radburn, November 2023) The Cape Town Guide by Dennis Edwards & Co. (1897) included this hotel on p109 in their list of leading hotels in Cape Town and its environs (Walker 2015: 68). See a postcard photo of the hotel c1905 on flickr.
