Click to view large map Coordinates: | (Pryce-Lewis list 4 048) At the time Rennie surveyed the building, in March 1978, the premises were occupied by the 'Diamond Bar'. Rennie remarked that the eaves were c1880 in style, and that there was possibly older fabric within. The gable still displays a moulded diamond shape in the upper half and the word 'Diamond' in the lower. Old surveys show a row of four attached "hire houses" which extended along Harrington Street from Longmarket Street to St James Terrace, and were sold off as individual properties in 1874. This building covers two of those units (Lots B and A). The grouping of the windows into threes, and the narrow and asymmetrical entrance on the left-hand side might indicate conversion of two existing structures rather than a completely new building. (Arthur Radburn, February 2026) Cherry's second [hotel design] commission was in 1898 when he was requested by a Mr M Farrell to design the Diamond Hotel. It was a two-storey hotel, typical of the 1890s. [...] By 1934 the hotel had closed and the site, as per Juta's Street Directory of that time, stated: Diamond Hotel bar and bottle-store. The remainder of the hotel was presumably occupied by the proprietor of the bar and bottle-store, and his family. (Walker 2015:34) This building was the annex of the Fugard Theatre from 2010 - 2021.
