| 1903: Alterations (Pryce-Lewis list 13 270) Scottish-born Dr Lawrence Crawford (1867-1951) was professor of mathematics at the SA College/University of Cape Town 1899-1938, and a Cape Town city councillor 1940-51. He bought the property from Andrew B. Reid in 1902. As the house is shown on his 1902 survey diagram but not on Reid's 1899 diagram, it appears that the house may have been built between those dates. The house has a heritage grading of 3C ("significant in the context of a streetscape or direct neighbourhood"). The city council describes the building as an "asymmetrical villa" which has had "unsympathetic alterations to the front of the dwelling" but whose "heritage value can be ameliorated". The statement of significance reads "Early 20th century residential densification. Some architectural merit. High boundary wall detracts from heritage value". (Arthur Radburn, April 2026) |
