The building is situated on the corner of what was originally known as Main Street and 7th Avenue. It housed the offices of the early land surveyors Fletcher & Espin. Its neighbours at that time were the Stock Exchange and the Post Office Building. It was later renamed Taramal House.

The Imperial Building is now the National Gallery.
