BYEWAYS
This house was designed in 1912 by Baker and Fleming
for Robert Alfred Lehfeldt, Professor of Natural
Philosophy and Physics at the South African School of
Mines. Lehfeldt came to Johannesburg in 1906 to take up
the appointment and remained at that institution as
Professor of Economics, Economic History and Statistics
when it became the University of the Witwatersrand.
Byeways bears the hallmarks of the Arts and
Crafts movement using natural materials
and fine craftmanship.
