Hospital Terrace
Simonstown, Western Cape

Date:1813
Client:British Navy
Type:Hospital
Style:Georgian
Status:Extant

The wing to the north served as the hospital while the semi-detached housing in the south served as staff accommodation. The enclosing wall was added in 1817. The site has associative heritage value as being the first place in South Africa where Lord Lister's antiseptic methods were used while performing an operation to great success. The building remained a hospital until the early C20 when the new Naval Hospital was constructed. The old hospital section then served as the Dockyard Police Club while senior naval officers occupied the residential component. It still serves the South African Navy today.
