With the First British Occupation of the Cape of Good Hope (1795-1802) it was realized that the Castle of Good Hope could not be readily defended against attack. Hence General JH Craig, Officer Commanding of the occupying forces, had additional blockhouses erected up the flanks of Devil's Peak, this being one of them. It is now ruinous.
