The site was originally granted to Jan Hendrik Munnik in 1784. In 1813 John Osmond bought the site and lived there until his death in 1847. At the time he was the wealthiest citizen of Simon's Town, owning nearly every property there, hence his title 'King John', which brought, by association, the name 'The Palace' to his residence. The house thereafter was owned by William Coghill. It was bought by the Imperial Government in 1886 for use as military barracks, usually as a Mess for Officers of the Garrison Artillery (Alberts, 1992 : 18)
