This is the oldest residence in what is now the suburb of Railton, built even before the designation of the area as 'Coloured' in the time of the apartheid regime in the 1970s. Grandfather Bloemfontein constructed it for his wife and eight children, it still remaining in possession of the family. It follows the local tradition of Cape reed thatched cottages over a single room with Komyntjie (external hearth and chimney). References: Swellendam Heritage Association. 2018.
