The first Schoenstatt Shrine was founded by Father Joseph Kentenich in Germany in 1914.

Since then more than 200 such shrines have been established in 30 countries throughout the world. All Schoenstatt shrines are exactly the same size, have the same architecture, the same altar, the same statues and the same interior, thereby creating a sense of global conformity.

The Cathcart Shrine was consecrated on 18th December 1949, when Father Kentenich, then 65 years old, travelled to the Eastern Cape from Germany to preside over the official blessing ceremony.

The Cathcart Shrine - which recently celebrated its 70th Jubilee - was the first Schoenstatt shrine established on the African continent and is known as the "Mother Shrine of Africa".
