This replaced the first Nurul Anwar Mosque, built in 1885, which stood on the same site.

“The Nurul Anwar Mosque, which was built in 1885 by Gatiep Railoun from Java, was a stone’s throw away from our house in Fagan Street. […] Imam ‘Tata’ Kamaludeen Railoun was succeeded by Imam Noor Wentzel in 1949 and under his leadership a collection drive was organised. The old masjid was demolished in the 1950s and with Boeta Armien Railoun as architect and contractor, the total reconstruction began. An upstairs section made provision for females and an ablution block and toilets were added. A striking feature of the reconstructed masjid is the minaret.” (Rhoda 2012:18).
