Lenie Marais - renowned as baker, teacher and medicinal plant expert - built most of this house herself. She and her husband, Willem, moved in during 1928. Her creativity is evident in the decorative gable and the river pebbles used as adornment around the windows and doors. This was one of the first houses in the Kloof to be rented to visitors. During restoration in 1992 (by the Southern Cape branch of the Simon van der Stel Foundation and the Zietsman Trust) a tree trunk - probably too difficult to remove - was discovered in one of the walls.
