Pont over Buffalo River
Pontoon used to cross the Buffalo River in East London - prior to the construction of the first Buffalo Bridge in 1908.
The first pontoon over the Buffalo River was built in 1857 by the military. In 1874 it was taken over by the municipality and a new pontoon was built 'not a moment too soon as the old one canted onto its side on Friday night and is useless' (Daily Dispatch 28 September 1875)
