Sandile's Grave Stutterheim, Eastern Cape

The grave was declared a National Monument in 1941. The grave was exhumed under permit of the SAHRA for purposes of forensic verification of the human contents as being that of the Xhosa King by the Department of Anatomy of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria between 2005 05 31 to 2005 06 01. For the purposes the headstone was demounted. The evidence supports the known facts of the authenticity of the grave. The grave was restored and the headstone re-instated.
