The building was designed for Port Elizabeth Assurance Ltd in late 1891 and constructed in 1892. It was designed by the prominent local architect George William Smith. It's style was Victorian Gothic Revival. It was demolished in 1954 to make way for the New Southern Building Society building, which still stands on the site today.
