The Sterkfontein Dam is located on the Nuwejaarspruit, a tributary of the Wilge River in the upper catchment area of the Vaal River in the Free State Province. It forms part of the Tugela-Vaal Water Project and the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme and is South Africa's first water-transfer receiving reservoir, and thereby unique in that it has no spillway. The dam wall was raised in 1983 by 24 meters to 93 meters above its lowest foundation. It is the highest earth fill dam and the second highest dam wall in South Africa.
