Click to view large map Coordinates: | The Tlhabane Police Station has an L-shaped plan and the single storey residential scale with double pitched roofs and gable ends – was presumably intended to make the building neither imposing nor intimidating. The Police Station is constructed with a face brick plinth, painted tyrolean plastered walls and with concrete roof tiles. The south wing accommodates the administration offices – the north wing accommodates Charge offices and Holding cells. The latter wing is arranged along a central spine with four small courtyard spaces at the north end – presumably external courtyard or exercise spaces to the adjacent Holding cells. Entry into the Charge Office occurs on the south side of the building at the point of intersection of the two wings. A black granite plaque adjacent to this entrance records the usual SAPS Code of Conduct - but this plaque was clearly erected without ceremony as it has neither a date nor a name of a dignitary attending. A recent thatched double storey building (with dormer window) annexed to the south side of the north wing - is an incongruous addition to the Police Station. A defensible guardhouse at the entrance to the Police Station confirms that difficult civil conditions were extant in South Africa prior to achieving democracy in 1994. Informal offices and storerooms provided in park homes and in shipping containers in the car park of the Police Station suggest that the accommodation provided in the Police Station building (in 2015) was then inadequate.
